Why Contact An Attorney?
The right to seek compensation for injuries has been a part of the American legal system since the founding of our country and the adoption of our Constitution. You should not feel as though you are creating a burden to society by pursuing a claim against someone whose fault caused injury to you. In most cases, insurance coverage is in place, and all settlement payments (plus costs of defending the negligent party) are paid by an insurance company. If someone else injures you, and it is not your fault, and you do not pursue a claim, that person’s insurance company will happily record YOUR damages as an addition to THEIR net profit.
Insurance companies have tried with some success to brainwash the public into believing that insurance fraud is rampant and that many people will exaggerate their injuries to get “easy money.” That has not been our experience. Most people only come to our office seeking what they are legally entitled to receive. In over 25 years of practice, we have seen very few people claim money they did not deserve. Unfortunately, insurance companies and their well-paid defense lawyers are all too eager to raise questions about the character and integrity of people seeking compensation for personal injury. When that happens, we will fight for our clients to not only recover fair compensation, but also to defend them from such unjustified and unscrupulous attacks on their character.
Do You Really Need An Attorney?
It is true that you can represent yourself. However, there is an old saying, “He that is his own lawyer has a fool for a client.”
Litigants are often too emotionally involved in their case to effectively represent themselves in legal proceedings. Unfocused emotion on the part of an unrepresented litigant could possibly lead to an undesired result due to an inability to effectively present the case. Even setting aside emotional factors, the unrepresented client is seldom used to dealing with insurance companies, medical facilities, experts, the rules of evidence and, of course, appearing in court. Such inexperience can lead to an undesirable result. Part of our job is to counsel our clients and become their advocate.
